Firestorm version 6.6.17 (the last pre-PBR version) will remain available “forever.”
The last non-PBR viewer will remain available for any users who are unable or unwilling to make the update. However, it will not be maintained. and we will not be able to fix bugs or retrofit new services, so the choice does carry a price tag:
you will:
- not see PBR materials, and when regions begin to employ PBR Terrain, older viewers will see grey/white ground.
- you will lose voice capability
- You will also not have access to other post-PBR features such as Emojis. ( OH NO, the HORROR)

As always, the responses are interesting reading, for me at least!

Since I'm pretty sure I will stay on v6 forever (no hardware to run v7, and I'm not willing to change my actual hardware anytime soon, since it does the job just right and I'm happy with it), all I can say is... it is what it is ! I can live without all the features mentioned above. I would like the built-in emoji support from v7 on v6 through .
Funny thing: in the Windows version of Firestorm v6.6.17, some emojis (inserted by other means, with copy-paste etc.) do display properly. But on Linux (in my case Linux Mint 21.2), the same v6.6.17 is incapable of displaying them (they appear as squares) .

Why wouldn't someone update and just have reflections turned off? Kind of like the holy grail DOF setting. If it's needlessly taxing, or you can't use it, just turn it off.

Because, you can't.
Not sure what do you mean with the DOF setting but in Firestorm v7, PBR stuff/rendering is always enabled and you can't turn it off, sadly.

The most useful thing about PBR is not the new textures, it is reflection probes and enhance indoor lighting they can achieve when set up right.

I was talking about Depth of Field, something most people keep off.
So you can't turn off Screen Space Reflections in Firestorm? That'd be the real meat and potatoes on what bogs a system down from the PBR. Everything else is, if it's even being used, only applying an additional 1024 texture. Be a different story if everyone was using materials.
(Context, I just use SLV myself. Too lazy for the external updates/installers Firestorm kept rolling out)
